YMCA Bedfordshire

Could you offer support to a 16-20 year-old, so they can learn independent living skills? Bedford Borough Council has joined together with YMCA Bedfordshire to implement a new ‘Supported Lodging Scheme’ in Bedford Borough.

Supported lodgings is where individuals, couples or families become ‘Hosts’ and provide accommodation and support for a young person in their home. Hosts will be supported by a dedicated Supported Lodgings Coordinator, provided with training and on-going support, an income and a suitably matched young person.

Cllr Roger Rigby, portfolio for Adult Services, at Bedford Borough Council, said: “When a young person becomes homeless they are often profoundly lonely, isolated and vulnerable. Without support they can easily be excluded, but with the support and comfort of a place they can call ‘home’, they can learn independent living skills and go on to lead successful adult lives.”

Amy Elliott, from YMCA Bedfordshire, commented: “The young people I have met who’ve been able to access Supported Lodgings overwhelmingly sing its praises! It has given them an opportunity to learn through experience, to feel someone cares, to be respected and to feel more confident about their future.”

If you  have a spare room in your home to give a young person a better start in life, please call Amy Elliott at YMCA Bedfordshire on 01234 307040 or 07508807441 for an information pack or informal discussion.
