WE SEEK YOUR POINTS OF VIEWS ON HEALTHWATCH BEDFORD

Bedford Borough Council is consulting on Healthwatch Bedford; a new local consumer watchdog for health and social care. The consultation process will run from 16 July - 30 September 2012.

It is vital that feedback is gathered from local people to ensure that Healthwatch Bedford is able to serve the community well.

Healthwatch Bedford will have three functions:

  • Influencing – helping shape the planning of health and social care services
  • Signposting – helping people access and make choices about care
  • Information, advice and guidance – including independent advocacy for individuals making complaints about healthcare

Some specific organisations, and individuals, will be targeted as part of the consultation, such as local voluntary organisations and vulnerable people. The Council is also working with local NHS services to raise awareness of the consultation.

Cllr Colleen Atkins, Portfolio Holder for Adults Services at Bedford Borough Council, said: “It is crucial that we gather as much information as we can in order to best serve our local community with top-quality health services. We want to shape services to meet demand. I encourage everyone to take a few minutes out of their busy schedules to feed into the consultation, so that we can maximise our efficiency.”

Healthwatch Bedford will need a skilled governing board made up of local people. It must be a not-for-profit organisation that is able to employ staff, manage volunteers and, if they choose, be able to sub-contract parts of its role and be commissioned by Bedford Borough Council from April 2013.

The consultation document is available at www.bedford.gov.uk/healthwatch

Alternatively, copies of the consultation documents will be available at Borough Hall reception and all Borough libraries, or by contacting Anona Hoyle, at Bedford Borough Council, on 01234 718345.

As part of the consultation process, there will also be an opportunity to attend consultation events on Thursday 23 August, and Wednesday 5 September 2012, within the borough, further details will be available on the website www.bedford.gov.uk/healthwatch
