Improvement works to Ampthill Road

A scheme to improve Ampthill Road gets underway on Monday 7th July.

The works involve a number of significant improvements to the road surface, junction layouts, new road markings and signage as well as improvements for cyclists.

When the new Morrisons supermarket opened on a derelict site on Ampthill Road last summer, a series of improvements were made to the road as well as the junction with Rope Walk and London Road in order to cope with the expected increase in traffic. Bedford Borough Council and the developers have continued to monitor the road and these works are now taking place to make further improvements.

Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “The opening of the new supermarket on Ampthill Road was a significant boost for Bedford, bringing a former derelict and abandoned site back into use.

“The supermarket has proved very popular and therefore the road is carrying more traffic than before. It is good news these further improvement works are taking place, at no cost to the Council, which should help with congestion as well as improving the road for all users.”

Works start on Monday 7th July and are scheduled to be completed by the end of the month. To minimise disruption, no works will be carried out during the weekend of Bedford River Festival.

These works are being carried out by the developers of the site which includes the new Morrisons supermarket and are at no cost to the Council.

The works include:

• Resurfacing of parts of Ampthill Road
• The bus lane will reduced near the junction with Westville Road to extend the junction
• New road signs and road markings approaching the roundabout at the junction of Ampthill Road, London Road, Rope Walk and Kingsway
• Green high friction surface added to cycle lanes on the roundabout
• New electrical connection added to bus stop, allowing real time information to be displayed.
