Parent Partnership

To acknowledge the efforts and commitment of the new volunteer staff that will support the work of the Parent Partnership Service, a certificate presentation will take place with the Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, on Wednesday 16th July, at 4pm, within the Mayor’s Parlour.

The Parent Partnership service provides confidential information, advice and support to the parents and carers of children with special educational needs and disabilities.

As a small service, it relies heavily on the support of our volunteer ‘Independent Parental Supporters’ to assist the many parents who request help.

The Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “The positive impact volunteer staff have on those families that need support the most is immeasurable. This recognition of the excellent work they do is richly deserved.”

Parents can have serious difficulties coming to terms with their children’s disabilities and in navigating their way around the complex educational, care and health systems to obtain the help their children need. Many parents also have challenging needs and complex family circumstances of their own, which makes it even harder for them to manage their children’s difficulties.

In recent months, the service has been fortunate enough to ‘recruit’ five new volunteers, including three from minority ethnic heritage backgrounds whose additional cultural and linguistic skills should prove very helpful to the local community. All volunteers need to complete an intensive training course in order to become Independent Parental Supporters and be willing to work in sometimes quite emotionally demanding situations when carrying out their role.

If you would like further information on how to become an Independent Parental Supporter, contact David Newbury at Bedford Borough Council on 01234 276267 or email david.newbury@bedford.gov.uk
