PACE YOURSELF THIS SUMMER

To help make sure individuals enjoy themselves this summer, Bedford Borough Council is asking people to be more mindful of their alcohol consumption. The warmer weather may spark an increase in peoples’ alcohol intake and drinking responsibly can avoid a whole host of negative outcomes.

Cllr Louise Jackson, Portfolio Holder for Public Health at Bedford Borough Council, said: “We just want to remind people to keep hydrated when drinking throughout the summer. We are encouraging people to ‘think before they drink’ and take steps to help them stay safe. Simple measures such as eating before going out or drinking water intermittently throughout an evening can make a huge difference.”

Chief Inspector Stephen Vesztrocy, lead for community policing in Bedford, said: “Although it is nice to enjoy a drink in the sunshine, it’s important that you don’t over-indulge as it could have tragic consequences, you’re also increasingly vulnerable if you’ve had a few too many and therefore could be more likely to become a victim of crime. We’re also reminding drivers to stick to the soft drinks. Being even slightly over the drink drive limit impairs your reactions and could have fatal consequences for you, your passengers, and other road users.”

Do you know how many units are in your alcohol?

Recommended guidelines suggest:

  • Men should not regularly drink more than 3-4 units of alcohol a day
  • Women should not regularly drink more than 2-3 units a day
  • With at least two alcohol free days per week

For those concerned about how much they think they are drinking, the Don’t Bottle It Up website offers a quick and easy self-analysis test, so people can check to see how much they are drinking, whether consuming too much or drinking safe levels http://www.dontbottleitup.org.uk/
