CRUCIAL POST AT BEDFORD HOSPITAL FOR VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE

An Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (IDVA) is now in post (since May 2017 for 12 months), based in Bedford Hospital, as part of a new pilot scheme.

The Hospital IDVA will operate on a ‘drop in’ basis allowing access to the service as need arises. This will allow patients to access advice and support directly and enable hospital staff to seek advice from the IDVA in relation to specific patient cases or general domestic abuse related queries.

The IDVA will provide initial advice, support and signposting for victims of domestic abuse and will aim to prevent escalation of domestic abuse by identifying a patients support needs and facilitating early access to services which can provide targeted support and assistance to meet assessed needs.

Cllr Colleen Atkins, Portfolio Holder for Community Safety and Regulatory Services said: “It can be hard to reach out to people who are victims of domestic abuse, so having someone in this post is crucial. The hospital is also an ideal location to be based, in order to direct those in desperate need.”

The IDVA role has been created through partnership working between Bedfordshire Domestic Abuse Partnership, Bedford Borough Council, Victim Support and Bedford Hospital and has been funded through a successful Better Care Fund.
