Summer Planting

Summer planting ensures a blooming lovely Bedford

Bedford is set to be blooming lovely during the summer, with the planting of over 8,000 bedding plants.

The planting process has been completed at a variety of locations including The Embankment, Norse Road Cemetery and outside the Town Hall on St Paul’s Square. Full bloom is expected from the beginning of this month.

The Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: "Our Clean, Safe and Green team does a fantastic job in brightening up the borough.  A huge amount of planning and hard work is involved, and the team deserves congratulations for the floral feasts for the eyes which are enjoyed by residents and thousands of visitors alike.”

At the end of May/early June all the winter bedding plants are removed to allow preparation of the beds prior to summer planting. Most of the plants removed are taken to a local green waste treatment site so they can be processed to create compost.

The planting phase takes about eight days and will result in some colourful displays that will last right through the summer.

Varieties used for the floral displays include geranium, dahlia, begonia, verbena, lobelia and rhubarb chard.

The range of colours, textures and types of flower will capture the imaginations of both residents and visitors alike and provide an eye-catching display the borough can be proud of.
