Run With The Stars

Thursday 27th May 2010

RUN WITH THE STARS – how will you compare?

A once in a lifetime event will be taking place at the Bedford International Athletic Stadium on Saturday 12th June, as people are invited to ‘Run with the Stars’. A delegation of world class Kenyan athletes will be present on the day, and people are invited to come and run a mile with them! The stadium will open to the public at 1.30pm, in preparation for the two races taking place. ‘Run 1’ will start at 2.10pm, and ‘Run 2’ will begin at 3.10pm.

The ‘Run With the Stars’ event is open to all, anyone can turn up, however participants will be asked for a donation of their choice, to go towards one of two charities chosen by Athletics Kenya; either The Paul Tergat Foundation or the Utange Orphanage project, in Kenya.

The six star athletes present on the day, will be: Paul Tergat – multiple world cross-country champion and two-time Olympic silver medallist.  Catherine Ndereba – two-time world marathon champions, ex world record holder for marathon. Duncan Kibet – second fastest ever over marathon distance for men. Benjamin Limo – world champion over 5000m. Wilfred Bungei – reigning Olympic 800m champion. Sammy Wanjiru, reigning Olympic marathon champion and London marathon winner 2009.

For those eager to take part, all they need to do is turn up at the Athletics Stadium (no need to book) 20 minutes before the start of their chosen run. There will be a short group warm-up before the run starts, and all participants will be given a souvenir certificate when they finish.

The runs are one mile long, flat and fun. It is not necessarily a race and no special clothing is required, although the wearing of trainers is advised. The event will offer everyone the chance to be inspired by some of the fastest athletes in the world.

The ‘Run With The Stars’ event will be a taster of what’s to come, as the build up to the Olympics 2012 starts steadily heating up. It was announced yesterday, that the Olympic Flame will arrive in the UK on Friday 18 May 2012, and will travel around the U.K for 70 days, arriving in London the weekend before the 2012 Games begin.

Bring your friends, family and camera!
