Superstar Athletes Set to Visit Bedford

SUPERSTAR ATHLETES SET TO VISIT BEDFORD

World famous athletes are set to arrive at the Bedford Swan Hotel, at 10.30am on Sunday 6th June. Bedford Borough will be their home throughout their stay, as they carry out a packed timetable of events that will inspire locals, transforming the lives of those they come into contact with.

The special relationship between Bedford Borough Partnership and Kenyan Community Bedford generated an idea to issue an invitation to Athletics Kenya. The mood was ‘ecstatic’ when news arrived that the world class athletes (Paul Tergat, Catherine Ndereba, Duncan Kibet, Wilfred Bungei, Benjamin Limo,  Samuel Wanjiru), had accepted the invitation. Plans were quickly set in place to maximise the potential of their visit and so create a lasting legacy, making it memorable and fulfilling for people within the borough to enjoy, and for all officials and athletes alike.

The athletes will visit children’s wards within the hospital, integrate with students on school visits, and even challenge locals to endurance running master classes for local aspiring athletes. The ‘Athletics Kenya’ visit is also hoped to spur on various projects and help introduce an annual 10k race within the town centre, and school twinning arrangements.

The Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “It’s thrilling to have such huge names from the sports world visiting our borough. Their support will help generate a lasting legacy for both Athletics Kenya and Bedford. We are looking forward to working towards links with Kenya in the coming years.”

The visit may further outline Bedford’s ability to act as a training base for other world class athletes, as it fast becomes renowned for its exceptional training equipment. Bedford International Athletic Stadium is no stranger to top world class athletes such as our very own Paula Radcliffe and Liz Yelling.

As preparations for the London 2012 Olympics heat up, it is expected that the Athletics Kenya teams’ visit will cause a flurry of excitement, as local residents get bitten by the ‘sports bug’.
