We Felt Home from Home

Wednesday 16th June 2010

The world famous ‘Athletics Kenya’ team called Bedford their ‘home from home’ this June, as they visited the borough to inspire people along the way and develop future links. The visit came to a close over the weekend, yet a lasting legacy between Athletics Kenya, Bedford Borough Partnership and the Kenyan Community in Bedford continues following a successful week of events focussed on inspiring young people to engage in sporting activity.

The Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “It was an honour to welcome these world class athletes to our borough. With excitement already growing as we move towards the 2012 Olympics in London, last week provided a wonderful opportunity to tap into that anticipation and encourage local children and young people to participate in sport.

“I was hugely impressed by the way in which the world class athletes threw themselves into the activities which took place over the week, making direct contact with a large number of local residents, especially young people. Perhaps they inspired a potential champion of the future!”

Throughout their stay, the sporting celebrities visited a total of five borough schools, a children’s ward at Bedford Hospital, took part in a mass participation ‘Run With the Stars’ event, held at the Bedford International Stadium, and attended various other conferences and community events.
