Autism Friendly Signage
Oasis Beach Pool has now got the most
sophisticated autism-friendly signage placed around a swimming pool
within the U.K. The signage was fitted in March and was specially
designed with advice from local charity Autism Bedfordshire.
Autism can mean that individuals have
difficulty in understanding the world around them, and can find new
experiences or environments stressful. The unique fittings guide
individuals around the centre helping to reduce anxiety, and have
been provided as part of Bedford Borough Council’s ‘Aiming High’
programme to get children with disabilities accessing the universal
services available within the community.
Cllr Doug McMurdo, portfolio holder for
Leisure and Culture, at Bedford Borough Council, said: “Bedford
Borough Council is extremely proud of a flagship service that is
unique to the U.K. It means such individuals will be totally
accepted within this fun and active environment. It’s important
that our services are open to everybody and people with
disabilities are not hampered from using our facilities. If our
services need to be adapted in order to accommodate people with
specific needs, then we will endeavour do so when and where
Lifeguards are also on-hand to provide
supplementary support and assistance.
