National Family Week

National Family Week, which runs throughout 30 May – 5 June, serves to highlight the importance of families spending quality time together and partaking in leisure activities that help build even stronger bonds.

To celebrate ‘National Family Week’, people were invited to explore the wonderful world of bugs and butterflies at Pine Cones Children’s Centre, in Bedford, on 31st May.

The event was held in partnership with Cecil Higgins Art Gallery & Bedford Museum, who were on hand to provide participants with the chance to take a closer look at some of the hundreds of specimen bugs, beetles and butterflies it holds in its collections and the animals and birds that eat them.

Cllr Sue Oliver, portfolio holder for Children’s Social Care, at Bedford Borough Council, said: “According to a 2010 poll commissioned by National Family Week, the average family spends just 49 minutes a day together, so it’s time to shine the spotlight on spending time together as a family. This event encouraged families to spend time together, enjoy one another’s company and at the same time learn about the world of nature.”

On the day, there were also hands–on arts, crafts and messy play activities for children of all ages to take part in.
