Olympic Torchbearers

Do you know someone who should have a moment to shine? If so, you can nominate them to be a 2012 Olympic Torchbearer. The deadline for submitting nominations to the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games is fast approaching on Wednesday 29th June. Mayor Dave Hodgson is encouraging residents to take this opportunity to seek recognition for a special person they know, whose story will inspire others.

The Mayor, Dave Hodgson, said: “We want to encourage local residents to nominate someone they feel has earned the privilege of taking part in the Olympic Torch Relay. Across the borough there are many inspirational people who have made outstanding contributions to their communities. It would be fantastic if they could be rewarded with such an honour. This is a great chance for unsung local residents to receive well-deserved recognition and play their own part in the 2012 Olympic Games.”

Cllr Doug McMurdo, portfolio holder for Leisure and Culture, at Bedford Borough Council, said: “The involvement of exceptional local people in the Torch’s journey will only strengthen our association with the Olympics. Bedford Borough has many connections with the Olympics through numerous great Olympians, for example, and the inclusion of inspirational Bedfordians in the Torch relay will only deepen our links with the games.”

The Olympic Flame will travel right around the UK and London 2012 aims to have Torchbearers carrying it as near to their local area as possible, so friends and family can cheer them on. Each Torchbearer will carry the Flame around 300 metres.
