ROBINSON POOL IS TO BE OFFICIALLY RECOGNISED AS ‘BABY FRIENDLY’

It's Breastfeeding Awareness Week across the UK, and Bedford Borough Council has joined forces with South Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (SEPT) to help mothers who are breastfeeding easily identify where they would be welcome when they are out and about in Bedford, through the ‘Baby Friendly’ award scheme.

On Wednesday 27th June at 9.30am, Robinson Pool will be the first Bedford Borough premises to receive ‘Baby Friendly’ recognition. The award is open to any establishment including cafes, restaurants and shops etc. who welcome mothers who are breastfeeding and who make efforts to accommodate them.

Once the award is made, a window sticker to show they are part of the scheme can be displayed on the entrance, as a visual sign for families.

Cllr Sarah-Jayne Holland, Portfolio Holder for Community and Regulatory Services at Bedford Borough Council, said: “You don't decide when your baby needs a drink, or needs food, your baby decides, and it can be at the most inconvenient of times.  It says a lot about our community that we are recognising the importance of this most natural of instincts and we are keen to promote places where our mothers can feel relaxed in baby-friendly environments.”

Jacky Syme – SEPT’s Breastfeeding Co-Ordinator said: “Many mothers tell us that they want to breastfeed their baby – usually for the first six months, because it is the healthier for mum and baby.  However, they have also told us that feeding in public can be difficult as they don’t know where to go, which places have changing facilities and they don’t always feel welcome.

All premises who meet the new criteria will be able to proudly display the new ‘Baby Friendly’ window sticker to show they are supporting the award.  We hope this will help mums and encourage more places to think about how they can be more welcoming too.”

Bedford Borough Council’s Environmental Health Officers are fully trained to support establishments in achieving the award and will provide information, resources and promotion of the accredited establishments.
