National Recycling Week

As part of National Recycle Week, which runs from the 18th to 24th June, Bedford Borough Council is encouraging everyone to remember to recycle while at home and out and about. Officers from the recycling team will be on hand in Bedford Town Centre on Wednesday 20th June to answer questions and offer advice, like that provided below;

Did you know?

Recycle at home
An extensive range of materials can be recycled in the orange lidded recycling bins and orange sacks -  including all types of plastic packaging (such as pots, bottles, tubs, trays, bags and film), paper, card, food and drinks cans, aluminium foil, empty aerosols and worn out textiles and shoes!

Recycle ‘on-the-go’
The dual recycling litter bins that are located around the borough are ideal for recycling items you use when out and about. There are now 28 of these bins at various busy amenity areas around Bedford and Kempston, as well as villages including Harrold and Sharnbrook.

Battery recycling
Following a successful trial, Bedford Borough Council’s kerbside household battery recycling collection now serves all households across the Borough.

Residents can simply fill their battery bag with used batteries, seal it and leave it on top of their black refuse bin or on top of refuse sacks on their day of collection. Battery bags left out for collection are then replaced by the collection crews.

Recycle your glass
If everyone in England recycled just one more glass jar it would save enough energy to light 8 million watt light bulbs constantly for one year!

Glass bottles and jars can be recycled by taking them to your local glass recycling site. To find your nearest glass recycling site, check our list of sites online at www.bedford.gov.uk/recycling.

Cllr Charles Royden, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Transport said; “National Recycle Week serves as a timely reminder of the importance of protecting our environment and of reducing, reusing and recycling. Diverting waste from landfill helps to preserve the local and wider environment and saves taxpayers’ money.

The recycling services for households in Bedford Borough are extensive and very straightforward, and I would encourage everyone to make use of the facilities on offer.”
