Pop-Up Museum

THE HIGGINS HOLDS ITS NEXT POP-UP MUSUEM

There is a Pop-up Museum planned as The Higgins, Bedford’s contribution to Bedford’s launch event for Refugee Week 2012. The event will take place in Harpur Square, outside the Central Library, from 12noon to 2pm, on Tuesday 19th June. Bedford Borough Council is also providing a market stall, so there will be some cover from the rain!

A pop-up museum is a museum that last only for one day. The museum is made up of all the things you bring with you. You write a label for your object, have a look at objects others have brought and talk with people about the things they have brought and the stories behind them. You stay as long as you wish and when you leave you take your object with you. The aim is simply to start conversations with people.

The theme for this pop-up museum is ‘things that remind you of home’ and ‘home’ can be interpreted in many ways. It could be an object that comes for another country, something you or a parent, grandparent or great grandparent brought with you when you or they came to this country. It could be something that reminds you of your house, or of Bedford, that you would want to take with you if you had to leave this country. If it is large or very fragile or valuable, we suggest you bring a photograph instead of the object.

Cllr Doug McMurdo, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture at Bedford Borough Council, said: “Pop-up museums seem to be on trend for 2012. The Higgins’ last pop-up museum was extremely successful with a big turnout of people both taking part and observing. This event looks set to be another such success, and all for a great cause.”

While Bedford Borough Council’s flagship Art Gallery and Museum is closed for redevelopment, a huge range of projects and activities like this are taking place to build new audiences and remind people why the objects we cherish and the stories we tell matter so much. This work is made possible by funding from the Borough Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund and The Bedford Charity.

We will be holding a third pop-up museum on Saturday 4th August at the Bedford International Athletics Stadium as part of the LIVE Site celebrations for the Olympics.

Refugee Week has been taking place every year since 1998 and events will be happening all over the country to discover and celebrate the contributions refugees bring to the UK. For more information about other events locally for Refugee Week see http://www.refugeeweekbedford.org/
