YOUTH INNOVATION FUND – 14 PROJECTS DELIVERED

As a result of the Youth Innovation Fund project, young people across the borough are being kept busy - 14 youth innovation projects are now up-and-running after securing funding from Bedford Borough Council in March this year.

Funding was made available for community groups, charities and not-for-profit organisations to bid for up to £3,000 to spend on projects that would engage with young people in the borough. The Youth Innovation Fund project follows the success of the Youth Innovation Zone project, which also let young people deliver similar outcomes for their age group.

The bids were scrutinised by a panel made up of both young people, and professionals; resulting in a total of 14 projects being either fully or part-funded.

Bids came in from a diverse range of groups including Parish Councils, charities, social enterprises and sports clubs.

Cllr Sue Oliver, Lead Member for Children’s Social Care, at Bedford Borough Council said: “The participants in this scheme developed skills in negotiation and influence, consultation and research, and worked as a team to bring about impressive results. Many original ideas have been brought to life, and young people will engage in these projects for years to come.”

Examples of projects include:

Brickhill Parish Council - part of the original Youth Innovation Zone, they are now holding a monthly open access drop-in youth session at Brickhill Community Centre. The open access sessions incorporate planned activities which a steering group, made up of young people, plan and organise.

Sports Traider - the charity is using the Youth Innovation Fund grant to deliver a sports coaching project, where training is offered to young people help them to become sports coaches. The young coaches will deliver various sports sessions to other young people across Bedford Borough, and have the opportunity to gain nationally recognised coaching qualifications and accreditations.
