GOVERNMENT CHIEF CONSTRUCTION ADVISER CELEBRATES 3,000 SCHOOL PLACES MILESTONE IN BEDFORD BOROUGH

Dr Peter Hansford, Government Chief Construction Adviser, visited schools in Bedford Borough earlier this month to celebrate the creation of 3,000 new pupil places delivered by Bedford Borough Council.

Over the last four years, 3,000 schools places have been created - and there are another 3,000 in the pipeline. The new classroom spaces have been applauded by Headteachers who have highlighted the excellent acoustics, extensive display spaces, and stunning architecture.

As part of Bedford Borough Council’s School Investment Programme, more than £48 million will be invested in schools by 2016. Bedford Borough is currently the sixth best place in the country for Lower and Primary schools according to Ofsted.

Dr Peter Hansford, Government Chief Construction Adviser, said: “Replicating the approach pioneered in Bedford Borough across the UK could be truly beneficial for local communities and enhance the quality of the education we are providing.”

The Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “We were delighted to show Dr Hansford around some of our new school buildings.  Our investment in this programme has meant we have been able to avert any shortage in places and to do so by providing high quality new facilities.  Local parents can rest assured that not only are there school places available for all local children, but that the new buildings going up provide an environment in which high standards of teaching and learning can take place.  This is no more than local pupils and teachers deserve.”

Cllr Henry Vann, Portfolio Holder for Education at Bedford Borough Council said: “This is an important stage in our ambitious programme to get rid of the makeshift temporary classrooms of the past and deliver sufficient, high-quality spaces for children and young people to learn in.”

Bedford Borough Council has already invested heavily to ensure the creation of excellent teaching and learning space. This has included the construction and opening of three new primary schools, each with room for 420 pupils, and the expansion and upgrading of many others.

The new school builds were built by Scape, and its construction partners Kier and Willmott Dixon. All partners procure locally where possible and this approach generated £54m to the local economy.
