River Street Car Park

River Street car park in Bedford.

Shoppers and businesses to benefit from £120,000 Council car park improvements.

Bedford’s local economy is set for a boost under a £120,000 upgrade to the town centre’s River Street multi-storey car park.

The 465-space building that serves town centre shoppers, workers and visitors will get a new user-friendly, pay on foot system that sees drivers take a chip coin on entry instead of a paper ticket.

When motorists leave the car park they simply need to use the chip coin to find out how much they owe, before using the same coin to exit. It works exactly the same as traditional pay-on-foot systems, except the chip coins are more durable, secure and environmentally friendly than a paper ticket.

The car park works are due to begin on 12 June and the upgrade is expected to be finished by 27 June.

River Street car park is open 24 hours a day to support the night-time economy and up to two hours parking is free every Saturday. The car park is free to use on Sundays and Blue Badge holders will be able to use the car park in the same way as before, free of charge at all times.

Councillor Charles Royden, Deputy Mayor and Portfolio Holder for Environment and Transport, said: “We have invested millions of pounds in our town centre parking and we are continuing this investment to ensure that Bedford offers high quality services to residents and visitors to our town.”

Motorists will be issued with a chip coin upon entry to River Street car park, which they need to retain until they are ready to leave.

If paying by cash or card, the chip coin can be inserted into any of the new payment machines, which will display the amount due. Once a payment has been made the chip coin will be returned and this can then be used at the exit barriers to leave the car park. All machines will provide change.

The car park system will be monitored 24/7. Anyone experiencing a problem when paying for parking will be able to press a button and speak to an assistant.
