RUN WITH THE KENYANS

EVENT… IS FAST APPROACHING

The young people of Bedford are being offered a once in a lifetime opportunity – to run with world class Kenyan athletes that have flown over to the U.K in order to compete in the 2012 Virgin London Marathon! Each borough school that is a participant in Bedford Borough Council’s Sports Development Teams ‘Marathon Club’ project have been invited to send up to 30 young people to Bedford Park from 12 – 3pm, on the Monday 23rd April to “run a Golden Mile” with six of the best marathon runners in the world.

The Kenyan marathon runners and Kenyan community had established a close relationship with Bedford since 2010, when the Kenya Athletics Kenya Chairman, Isaiah Kiplagat, and Mayor of Bedford, Dave Hodgson, subsequently signed a Memorandum of Understanding between Bedford and Kenya. The agreement advanced educational, cultural, business and sporting ties between the two countries.

Cllr Doug McMurdo, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture at Bedford Borough Council, said: "This is an exciting and unique initiative that has been developed for young people in Bedford schools to link the enthusiasm and energy created by London 2012 into Bedford’s special relationship with its Kenyan community. It means individuals can watch these athletes on television, only to have the chance to meet and run with them the very next day!"

The Chairman of the Kenya Community in Bedford, Jack Waiyaki, said marathon runners and the Athletic Kenya officials had agreed to take part in the community event organised by the Kenya Community and Bedford Borough Council in Bedford.

The Kenya community in Bedford, together with the Borough Council, wanted to use the visit to help inspire young people and increase their participation in physical activities and sports.

A number of other sports activities will be on offer during the afternoon and schools will be given information packs on how to continue with physical activity/sports after the event.
