Statements of SEN

THE RIGHT STATEMENT FOR YOUR CHILD

Bedford Borough Council helps parents of children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) to secure the additional support, or specialist intervention, for their child’s needs. Since 2009, the statement for every child within Bedford Borough has been finalised well within the statutory timescale of six months.

Cllr David Sawyer, Portfolio Holder for Education at Bedford Borough Council, said: “Our SEN team has an excellent track record of supporting the education of children with special needs. Every child assessed has different requirements which must be given careful consideration to make sure that the right package is secured for them and that they are able to flourish.”

SEN panels take place every two weeks and consist of a board of multi-disciplinary professional staff who together determine an individual child’s needs. Parent volunteers sit on the SEN panels, and this has proved invaluable in helping other parents, and their children, with a way forward and to access support.

The Statutory Assessment Team actively seek to keep local pupils within the borough, and look at creative packages of support so individuals remain within their communities.
