FLY A FLAG FOR COMMONWEALTH DAY

A DISPLAY OF RESPECT FOR DIVERSITY

For the first time ever, the nation will join together, flying flags to mark Commonwealth Day. Bedford Borough’s flag raising ceremony will take place on Monday 10th March, at 10am, at Borough Hall.

The new initiative enables people in their local communities to unite with others nationwide in a widespread public expression of commitment to the Commonwealth; appreciation of the values it stands for, and the opportunities offered to its citizens around the world.

The Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “In a display of support for diversity, we will be raising one of 500 Commonwealth flags being flown throughout the United Kingdom on the day. Our Borough, which is home to residents from a wide-range of different faiths and ethnicities, is an excellent example of the benefits of people coming together to form an integrated community.”

Local authorities and civic dignitaries, community groups and charities throughout the British Isles are taking part in local flag raising events and ceremonies.

If anyone from a Commonwealth country would like to come along to Bedford Borough’s ceremony, and raise a hand-held flag to represent their country, contact Denise Malone, at Bedford Borough Council, on 01234 718620. Denise will be able to supply the hand-held flags, upon request.
