Cycling in the town centre

A consultation regarding cycling in the pedestrianised parts of Bedford town centre is now open.

Cycling is currently prohibited in pedestrianised parts of the town centre*, 24 hours per day. The consultation is to consider whether cycling should be permitted through the town centre outside normal shopping hours

The pedestrianised parts of Bedford town centre lie on two important cycle routes; north to south and east to west. As a result, those wishing to cycle across the town centre must either cycle illegally through the town centre or detour along busy roads.

In addition, surveys in 2008 and 2013 of cyclists using Bedford train station found that the ban on cycling in Midland Road was one of the biggest barriers to cycling to the train station.

Councillor Charles Royden, Portfolio Holder for the Environment and Transport, said: “We provide well over 50 miles of cycleways and paths across Bedford Borough and have also made significant investment to improve cycling provision in many areas, including cycle lanes in Dame Alice St, Park Avenue and Goldington Road.

“This consultation is considering whether we could make further common sense improvements by allowing cycling through the town centre, outside of busy shopping periods when there are not many pedestrians around.

“I would urge anyone with an opinion on this issue to respond to the consultation before it closes.”

The consultation is considering allowing cycling through the town centre before 9am and after 6pm and runs until 2nd May 2014.

Full details on how to respond are on the Borough website at www.bedford.gov.uk/tro.
