Commonwealth Day

FLY A FLAG FOR THE COMMONWEALTH

On 9 March the nation will join together to mark Commonwealth Day and, at 10am, Bedford Borough Council will be are raising a commonwealth flag at the front of Borough Hall. The Council’s Chief Executive, Philip Simpkins, and Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, and will be hosting the event and the High Sheriff and HM Lord Lieutenant will be in attendance.

The initiative enables people in their local communities to unite with others nationwide in a widespread public expression of commitment to the Commonwealth; appreciation of the values it stands for, and the opportunities offered to its citizens around the world.

The Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “Commonwealth Day enables people around the world to come together in a celebration of the Commonwealth. It is fitting that we should mark the occasion here in Bedford Borough, where residents of a wide range of different faiths and ethnicities live together in a diverse, integrated community.”

Local authorities and civic dignitaries, community groups and charities throughout the British Isles are taking part in local flag raising events and ceremonies.

If anyone from a Commonwealth country would like to come along to Bedford Borough’s ceremony, and raise a hand-held flag to represent their country, contact Denise Malone, at Bedford Borough Council, on 01234 718620. Denise will be able to supply the hand-held flags, upon request.
