Davis Cup tennis trophy coming to Bedford

Great Britain won the Davis Cup in Belgium – and now the iconic trophy is set to come to Bedford this spring.

Bedford Borough Council and the Bedfordshire Lawn Tennis Association launched a joint bid to bring the giant tournament trophy to the town.

The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) has now confirmed that the Davis Cup will be visiting Bedford on 17 May.

The Davis Cup by BNP Paribas is the premier international team event in tennis. The trophy was lifted by the Great Britain team – which includes Andy and Jamie Murray – in November 2015. The win was Great Britain’s first Davis Cup victory in 79 years.

People will be invited to see the trophy on The Embankment (next to the Butterfly Bridge) from 10am to 2pm. There’ll also be ‘come and try tennis’ sessions on Longholme Meadow and in Russell Park. Refreshments will be available at the Kiosk and café by the Boating Lake.

Councillor Sarah-Jayne Holland, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, said: “It is such an honour to be hosting the Davis Cup in Bedford and we know lots of people will jump at the chance to see this prestigious trophy. We hope plenty of people will take part in the ‘come and try tennis’ sessions and, with a number of free hard surface courts available to play on each day of the week, it’s a fantastic time to get into the game.”

Francis Caldwell, Chairman of the Bedfordshire Lawn Tennis Association, said: “Winning the Davis Cup for the first time in 79 years was a fantastic achievement. The cup is one of the largest trophies in world sport and to bring it to Bedford and put it by the iconic Butterfly Bridge, whilst promoting tennis in the town, is really exciting. We want as many tennis fans to have the opportunity to see the cup and also have the opportunity to play some tennis.

“The Association has in recent years been working with the Council to deliver a parks tennis programme and this will add to that programme. Locating the trophy close to Riverside Tennis Club will enable our local tennis schools to enjoy the cup as well as all our local club players."

Fifty different venues across the country will have the chance to host the Davis Cup in their local community, park or club, with some surprise visits from team members. The aim is that every one of the LTA counties will receive a visit from the trophy to thank as many people as possible for their support for the Davis Cup winning team.
