Littering

Three Littering Prosecutions in One Day for Council

 

Three men have been ordered to pay fines and costs equalling almost £1300 for littering from vehicles in Bedford Borough after being caught by the Council’s Enviro Crime Team.

 

The men, from Bedford, Sandy and Wales failed to attend Luton Magistrates Court on February 22nd 2017 and were found guilty in their absence. All three were issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice which went unpaid and was then referred to the court where they were found guilty of littering contrary to Section 87 of The Environmental Protection Act 1990.

 

Mr Carlo Stagno of Sidmouth Close, Bedford was ordered to pay £427 after being found guilty of leaving litter in Rope Walk, Bedford in August 2016. The Court heard Mr Stagno was witnessed dropping litter out of his vehicle by a Council Officer. The Magistrates Court imposed a fine of £220 and Mr Stagno was also ordered to pay the Councils costs of £177 and a £40 victim surcharge.

 

Mr Martin Stimson of Robert Hunt Gardens, Sandy was ordered to pay £427 after being found guilty of leaving litter in Bedford Road, Cople in June 2016. The Magistrates Court who imposed a fine of £220 and Mr Stimson was also ordered to pay the Councils costs of £177 and a £40 victim surcharge.

 

Mr Byron Thomas of Orchard Park Estate, Carmarthen was ordered to pay £438 after being found guilty of leaving litter in Harrowden Road, Bedford in August 2016. The Court heard Mr Thomas was witnessed dropping litter out of his vehicle by a Council Officer and as a result the Magistrates Court  imposed a fine of £220. Mr Thomas was also ordered to pay the Councils costs of £187 and a £40 victim surcharge.

 

Deputy Mayor and Portfolio Holder for Environment Councillor Charles Royden said ‘Littering is a crime and no one has the right to litter in our Borough. These men were caught red-handed by our Enviro Crime Team and have paid the price.’
