St.Thomas More Get Ready

For the second year running, the students at St. Thomas More will be entering their Greenpower Electric Car in the borough-wide ‘Bedford Autodrome Schools’ Grand Prix’ on Sunday 22nd May.

The school will be entering two cars into Sunday’s race, offering more students the opportunity for hands-on racing on the day itself. The 2011 car is a direct development from the 2010 entry, which came third last year. All of the successful elements of the old car have been directly included, or further improved, into the 2011 vehicle.

There is little doubt that this is truly a home-grown car.  Weeks of effort from students with the support of Mr Prudden, current Design and Technology teacher, and Mr Reid, the school’s previous and now retired Design and Technology teacher, have really paid dividends – the new car looks spectacular and being 40% lighter than last year’s, is surely a real threat to the top spot!

The St. Thomas More team is far-reaching and totally inclusive.  Working to support the drivers is an extensive back-up team including pit crew, caterers, commentators, music mixers, website managers and even a facebook site dedicated to news about the car.

Cllr David Sawyer, portfolio holder for Education, at Bedford Borough Council, said: “The competition is really hotting up now as we hurtle through the last week before the much anticipated race. This event encourages some healthy competition amongst our borough schools. Most importantly, the students involved are able to socialise with one another and share their skills and knowledge on the day.”

Mr Richardson, Head teacher, at St Thomas More, commented: “It is fantastic to see such a huge effort come together.  The students, their parents and staff can all be proud of their achievements. I am sure that come race day we will see more successes for the cars!  I am really proud that my colleagues have provided an opportunity that will live with the students, and their families, for years to come.”
