Adoption Scorecards

ADOPTION SCORECARD SUCCESS

Central Government’s Adoption Scorecard figures reveal that Bedford Borough is in the top 10% of Local Authorities in England, coming 8th out of 152, for average length of care proceedings - taking only 40 weeks, against a national average of 52 weeks.

Data reveals that Bedford Borough Council has met the thresholds for children being adopted within 21 months of entering into care.

Overall, Bedford Borough is in the top 20% of Local Authorities in England, ranked in 29th place out 152 authorities, for averaging less than 18 months.

Cllr Sue Oliver, Portfolio Holder for Children’s Social Care at Bedford Borough Council, said: “We will always seek to find a placement which best fits a child's racial, religious and cultural backgrounds, however these factors are not a barrier to placing a child with a family. Bedford Borough Council remains committed to providing new families for those children who need them and our priority is that we find a loving home for a child in which they can flourish. I would like to thank the Borough’s dedicated social work teams who have worked hard to secure these pleasing results.”

The scorecards are a means to the government’s tougher approach to addressing underperformance in the adoption system. The new assessment process reduces bureaucracy and the delays which put off potential adopters and slow down the finding of loving homes for children. It came after national statistics revealed that just 3,050 children in care, including just 60 babies, found new homes through adoption last year, the lowest since 2001.

Adoption Scorecard data reveals that, in England, only 87 of 152 Local Authorities have met the threshold.
