Compost Week 2012

The twelfth annual international Compost Awareness Week (CAW) will be held from Sunday 6th to Saturday 12th May 2012.  Bedford Borough Council is encouraging its residents to “Give Back to the Earth” in line with this year’s theme to promote the making and using of compost at home.

During the week, Bedford Borough Council plans to stage composting events based around the theme with the aim of highlighting the great environmental benefits of home composting.  The Recycling Team will be in Bedford Town Centre on the 9th May 2012 to provide information on how to compost food waste with a Bokashi Composting Unit. The Team will also be on hand to offer composting advice at a composting workshop in the newly developing community garden in Addison Howard Park in Kempston on Saturday 12th May from 10am until 12noon.

In addition to these two events, Bedford Borough Council is also launching it’s improved Compost Scheme at Bedford’s HWRC. Following on from last year’s scheme and taking onboard customer comments, Bedford Borough Council are providing free bags of compost to residents at Bedford’s HWRC. 100 bags of compost are to be made available each week on a first come first serve basis. All you need to do is ask a member of staff who will be happy to supply you with a free bag. Reward vouchers will also be given out to attendees at community environmental events which they can redeem against free bags of compost. Residents who produce a voucher at Bedford’s HWRC will be guaranteed a bag of compost upon their visit..

UK households in England throw away around 4 million tonnes of waste every year that could have been composted.  Home composting not only helps to significantly reduce carbon emissions, it also reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill.

For those interested in home composting, now is the perfect time of year to get started.  Through Bedford Borough Council, householders can purchase home compost bins for as little as £10 for the Compost Converter 220 litre model and £13 for the larger 330 litre version.

For further information about these products, please call: - 0845 130 60 90.  Alternatively, you can also order your home composters and composting accessories online, just visit www.getcomposting.com.
