THE BOROUGH SECURES SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS IN EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS

The latest Department for Education (DfE) data relating to GCSE performance reveals substantial rates of improvement in education standards in Bedford Borough. The proportion of young people achieving 5 A* - C GCSE’s (or equivalent) by age 19 has increased by 2.4% to 83.4%, and continues to be higher than both the national (81%), and ‘statistical neighbour’ (82.6%) average.

Perhaps most striking are the figures which show the improvements made in closing the attainment gap for children and young people receiving free school meals.  Here, Bedford Borough is ranked 2nd out 11 statistical neighbours, having reduced the gap between the proportion of all young people achieving 5 A*-C GCSE’s and those in receipt of Free School Meals by 3% to 18%.  Performance in this respect is again higher in Bedford Borough than both the national and statistical neighbour average.

Cllr David Sawyer, Portfolio Holder for Education at Bedford Borough Council, said: “Last year’s GCSE results represented a substantial improvement in standards across the Borough, and what is really pleasing about these latest figures is that Bedford Borough is outperforming other areas in closing the attainment gap for disadvantaged young people at GCSE level. This is a testament to the hard work of teachers and pupils in schools across Bedford Borough. We will continue to support schools to drive up standards and build on the real improvements which are already taking place.”
