DRAGON BOAT RACING

With the next river festival a year away in July 2014, this summer will see one of its most popular events return to Bedford’s River Great Ouse for a special charity event.  Yes, The Dragon Boat Race is back by popular demand in 2013, and the call has gone out for people to form crews, and get paddling, in aid of three local charities.

Sunday 21st July is the date for this first for Bedford, with the unique Dragon Boat Race event taking place from 10.30am. No previous dragon boat racing experience is needed, just plenty of team spirit!

Money raised from the event will support this year’s three Mayor’s Charities; Autism Bedfordshire, Bedford Foodbank and Bedford Sea Cadets.

Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “This promises to be a fantastic summer event. The dragon boat races are always the highlight of the River Festival for participants and spectators alike. This event brings an opportunity, in this ‘off-year’ for the River Festival, for groups of friends, neighbours or work colleagues to get together for some great fun, while raising funds for three excellent local charities.”

Crews are expected to battle it out over a 350 metre course which will run along the picturesque Embankment.  All teams will be provided with a dragon boat and all racing equipment and will be included in at least three races on the day. As well as trophies for winners and runners up, there is a special trophy for the best dressed crew.  After a full day of racing, the final will be held at approximately 5pm.

Dragon boat racing is an ancient Chinese tradition and is emerging as a highly popular water activity. A minimum team of 16 people is recommended with a crew of  11 at a time in the boat to paddle as well as a drummer at the front and a helm appointed by the organisers at the tail to steer.

All teams will be entered into three qualifying races.

A fantastic, fun day out is guaranteed with bankside entertainment, music, food and activities for the whole family.

The entry fee per team is £320 (£20 each for a crew of 16).  Act now and form a crew!  For more information, either email events@bedford.gov.uk or phone 01234 718617 or contact The Rowing Club on 07903478099.
