Kite Fest Success

APPROX. 20,000 ATTENDED THE KITE FESTIVAL

Thousands ventured to Bedford Borough Council’s Bedford’s International Kite Festival on Saturday 24th & Sunday 25th May, in Russell Park, Bedford.

The event showcased kites from the four corners of the globe including: America, Canada, Japan, China, Germany, France Holland and Belgium as well as flyers from across the U.K.

The Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “This free event attracts thousands of visitors to Bedford. In its 12th year, it seems to be building in momentum, delivering a superb outdoor entertainment for the whole family to enjoy.”

A sample of just a few participants present on the day, included: Holland’s most famous kite makers, Bas and Sara Vreeswijk, from Holland, who make and design beautifully appliquéd kites - each design is ‘a work of art’ and are amazing to see. Iqbal Husain, from Switzerland, who is renowned for his Centipede Kites - his ‘chicken complete with frying pans’ kite also lays and drops eggs!, he had another kite, of a cow’s head, (with 70 beef burgers for the body), and showcased many more amusing kites. Godfrey and Karen Gamble, from Australia, are Australia’s best-known kite makers, their ‘Meg’s Head’ inflatable, won best soft kite and best of show at the Festival of the Winds at Bondi Beach, in Sydney, and the duo displayed their  beautifully decorated 3D kites.

Battle of the Bands took place in Russell Park, on Bank Holiday Monday (26th May), and ‘Social Resin’ won the prize of performing on the main arena music stage at the Bedford River Festival.

River Festival programmes are now available No. 13 and the Tourist Information Centre.
