NEW COUNCIL TAX BILLS FOR BOROUGH RESIDENTS

Bedford Borough residents will receive new Council Tax bills from Thursday 21 May 2015.

New bills are being issued following the Council Tax referendum held on 7 May 2015 in which voters rejected the Bedfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner’s proposed 15.8% increase in the Police’s element of Council Tax.

The new Council Tax bills are necessary because the Council was obliged by law to issue bills in March that included the Police and Crime Commissioner’s proposed 15.8% increase.  Following the outcome of the referendum, when voters opted to reject the increase, the new bills will show the Council Tax charge for the year based on the alternative lower increase of 2% on the Police and Crime Commissioner's element of Council Tax.

Councillor Michael Headley explained: “Most residents still have at least 8 monthly instalments to pay and they will receive a bill which shows reduced instalments for the remainder of the year.

Anyone that has already paid their bill for the year in full will receive a bill showing a credit and a refund will be issued automatically to these people over the next few weeks.”

The cost of issuing the new Council Tax bills must be met from the Police and Crime Commissioner’s budget.
