Dog Control Orders

Dog Control Orders Consultation is Now Live

Dog Control Orders benefit local communities by helping to maintain a clean and safe environment for people to live in. Children are at special risk from disease associated with dog fouling as each dog faeces can contain up to two million Toxocara eggs. As well as blindness, the Toxocara worm larvae can infect organs such as the liver, lungs, or brain. Symptoms can include stomach pain, swollen lymph glands and breathing difficulties.

Bedford Borough Council is now consulting with residents on the expansion of the Dog Control Orders.

This would include:

Dog Exclusion Order - The effect of the Order is to make it an offence for a person in charge of a dog to permit the dog to enter or remain on any land to which this Order applies.

Dogs on Leads Order - The effect of the Order is to make it an offence for a person in charge of a dog to fail to ensure that a dog is kept on a lead on any land to which the Order applies.

Those committing an offence can be fined up to £1,000. However, it is proposed to offer a Fixed Penalty Notice of £75 as an alternative to prosecution, which would discharge liability for the offence.

Cllr Charles Royden, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Transport, said: “We aim to promote responsible dog ownership and reduce complaints for dog issues such as dog fouling. This allows people, especially children, to safely access dog-free or dog-controlled areas intended for recreational purposes.”

The consultation closes on 31st July 2017. Comments received may be published.
