‘Paved with Gold’: Bedford’s Windrush Generation

The Higgins Bedford Collecting Stories for Upcoming Exhibition

The Higgins Bedford is looking for volunteers to help with an upcoming project celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Empire Windrush ship arriving with immigrants from the Caribbean to England.

The museum team are hoping to collect stories and hear the experiences of people who arrived from the Caribbean and settled in Bedford as part of the Windrush Generation. These stories will form part of the upcoming exhibition ‘Paved with Gold’: Bedford’s Windrush Generation which will open in October 2018. The exhibition is being developed in partnership with the museum’s Black History Panel.

The museum is working in partnership with the University of Hertfordshire and Nubian Teachings to provide oral history training to volunteers assisting with the project. The first training day is on Monday 21st May 2018.

Cllr Sarah-Jayne Holland said “This latest project is just one of the many ways that you can get involved at The Higgins Bedford. Our fantastic volunteers help us to reach even more people, enhance the experience of visitors to our local museum and art gallery, and deliver more activities and events. If you’d like to get involved, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.”

If you would like to be part of this project please get in touch with project leader and Keeper of Social History, Lydia Saul Lydia.saul@bedford.gov.uk or call The Higgins Bedford on 01234 718618. If you’d like to find out more about volunteering at The Higgins more generally, please email Antaya.Lendore@bedford.gov.uk
