Cllr Colleen Atkins, Executive Member for Adults Services at Bedford Borough Council, said: “Physical activity can improve strength, flexibility and tolerance and can provide long lasting benefits to stroke survivors. I am so pleased we are able to offer this scheme to individuals to enable them to continue their ongoing rehabilitation. The scheme also helps promote healthy lifestyles which supports the Council’s health and well-being aims and reduces the chances of readmission to hospital.”

Dr Diane Gray, Director of Strategy and System Redesign for Bedfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group (BCCG), said that: “The Bedford Borough Council provided Stroke Rehabilitation scheme is a great example of how the NHS and local authority can work together to improve the outcomes and quality of life for people who have had a stroke, helping them regain and maintain their independence.”

Bedford Borough Stroke Rehabilitation Scheme is one of the first in the country, and has been developed in conjunction with NHS Bedfordshire, the Beds and Herts stroke association and the Action for Rehabilitation from Neurological Injury Trust (ARNI). The scheme piloted in January 2012.
