Improving rental standards

A scheme to improve standards in rented accommodation in Bedford Borough has seen the first landlords involved receive their licenses.

Bedford Borough Council carried out a public consultation in 2012, proposing to extend the Houses in Multiple Occupation Licence to include properties with fewer floors and occupiers than was previously required.

Previously, landlords in the borough only required a license if their property comprised 3 or more floors, with 5 or more occupants and with shared amenities, such as bathrooms. This scheme had seen an increase in the quality of rented accommodation and it is hoped extending the license will improve standards further.

Councillor Sarah-Jayne Holland, Portfolio Holder for Community and Regulatory Services, said: “It is fantastic to see so many local landlords committing to the scheme and working with the Council to help improve the standard of accommodation in the borough.

“The majority of landlords have been very supportive of the scheme and we look forward to working with current and future landlords to continue to improve standards and ensure tenants can choose their property with confidence.”

Roy Ashley is one of the first landlords to receive his HMO license, he added: “This scheme is well worthwhile and I know a lot of hard work has gone into developing it.

“I believe the scheme will help to ensure longer letting periods and result in better properties overall as tenants will know their home is in a good condition and is a safe environment. I would urge all tenants to ask to see a certificate before moving into a property.”

Landlords remember that your application must be received by 5th May 2014 to qualify for the early take up discount!
