Welcome to Bedford Borough Council

Our Services A - Z :

Apply Any Time

If you are driven by a desire to positively change children’s lives, then please note that Bedford Borough Council is seeking social workers who would like to work in a service that is determined to make a difference to people's lives. The Council has re-launched their ‘apply any time’ website which outlines what Bedford Borough Council has to offer an experienced social worker – listing reasons why individuals would want to work in the borough.

The re-launched site promotes a new career progression scheme and an easier route to apply for vacant posts.  The site contains information about Bedford, what it’s like working for Bedford Borough and the opportunities for social workers to join at all levels.  Individuals can literally apply any time and their application will be assessed within a week. If suitable, individuals will be invited to interview and, if successful, offered a post with the service.

The Council also recently launched a Career Progression Scheme for social work professionals.

Karen Siggers, Social Worker at Bedford Borough Council said: “Bedford Borough Council is excellent at investing in their staff. I have been working within Children’s Services here for the past eight years and I have now completed my Masters in Social Work and Practise Teacher training. All Children’s Services departments work on the same floor, which makes it very easy to access support and advice from colleagues throughout the day. The salary is good and competitive and the benefits are great. If it wasn’t for the Car Loan Scheme, I wouldn’t have a car and I know many other local authorities don’t offer this. The working environment is friendly and managers are extremely approachable. There is an ‘open door’ policy, and again, this makes you feel both valued and supported.”

Sarah Hourigan, Social Worker at Bedford Borough Council said: “I applied for my post through the ‘apply anytime’ scheme and I found the process straightforward. I got an interview within a month of applying. Career progression has rocketed since new managers have been in place and management listen to ideas and incorporate staff suggestions. Individuals very much count in terms of decision-making. Your experience gained from doing the job, is recognised. It is a busy role and there are pressures, which is why having a staff lounge, staff canteen and the town centre just 5 minutes away, all help to relieve the stresses of the job. Such facilities allow you to reflect and unwind within beautiful surroundings.”

Kevin Crompton, Director of Children’s and Adults’ Services at Bedford Borough Council said: “We support our social workers every step of the way in order for them to become the best they can be. We want Bedford Borough to be the place where Social Care Professionals want to work, develop, and stay, so we are looking for individuals with vast potential. Bedford Borough Council offers a clearly defined career path, following the recent launch of our Career Progression Scheme.  Our investment in the scheme ensures we have a social care workforce that is skilled and knowledgeable, equipped to provide high quality services to help children, young people and vulnerable adults get the best possible outcomes.”

The Council is on a fast moving improvement journey and will launch the Bedford Social Work Academy later in the year, which will see 10 social workers make the transition from University to the frontline, under the supervision of two experienced practitioners.

Applications will be accepted at any time. If you would like an informal discussion about any of the opportunities, please contact the Recruitment Team on 01234 228081.
