CHELSEA’S CHOICE RETURNSa powerful production highlighting the issue of child sexual exploitation

Bedford Borough Council and the Bedford Borough Safeguarding Children Board (BBSCB) is endorsing a theatre production company to deliver two performances to parents which informs them about grooming and helps individuals to spot the signs of sexual exploitation.

Chelsea’s Choice is a hard-hitting 35 minute long play that is followed by a 25

minute interactive session which provides an opportunity to explore the issues raised in the safeguarding drama.

Cllr Shan Hunt, Portfolio Holder for Children’s Social Care at Bedford Borough Council, said: “Chelsea’s Choice was delivered to our Upper Schools last year and the production proved to be a very successful way of reaching young people, giving them some skills and knowledge to be able to protect themselves’ from this form of abuse. We hope to target parents with these next two performances, engaging with adults to raise awareness of child sexual exploitation is also crucial in helping to prevent victims of this crime."

The production, delivered by AlterEgo Creative Solutions Ltd, can be targeted at the following core groups; young people aged 12 +, parents, carers, teachers and professionals working with young people, and the Police and the Crown Prosecution Service.

Jenny Myers, Independent Chair of the Bedford Borough Safeguarding Children Board said: “The Board has taken a lead role in raising awareness of the risks of child sexual exploitation and, once again, is pleased to support the delivery of “Chelsea’s Choice” to ensure that children and young people have the chance to learn more about the risks and what they can do to keep themselves safe”.

Mark Collins, Assistant Chief Constable, said: “Having seen this play, I know first-hand just how powerful and moving it is, and I believe it’s a great tool in helping us raise awareness of this incredibly important issue.

“Child sexual exploitation is one of Bedfordshire Police’s top priorities and I welcome anything that can help educate people on the signs to look out for, as well as where to go if you have a concern.”

AlterEgo Creative Solutions Ltd. is a not-for-profit social enterprise dedicated to using theatre to inform, to educate and to entertain.

The Bedford Borough Safeguarding Children Board have invited parents to attend a performance on either Monday 23 November, at 6.30pm, at Bedford College, in Bedford or alternatively, on Wednesday 2 December, at 6.30pm, at Wootton Upper School, in Wootton.
