A 'Living in The Landscape' Family Day

Thursday 30th September 2010

Everyone is invited to a FREE family day out at Harrold-Odell Country Park, on Saturday 24th October, from 11am – 4pm. The event that will showcase how our predecessors made items with materials they sourced from their surroundings. In contrast, there will also be contemporary artists displaying how they make similar items today.

Visitors can expect a wide range of fascinating craftsmanship displays. A blacksmith from the company Red Dog Forge, will provide a fiery demonstration using a traditional Victorian farrier’s forge. There will an opportunity to witness the work of a Tudor leatherworker; the craft of Pavenham Rushworkers; and a variety of wood crafters, and traditional spinning and dyeing.

Cllr Doug McMurdo, portfolio holder for Leisure and Culture at Bedford Borough Council, said: “We are pleased to support this project, it certainly sets out to engage people, as they re-live the methods that were used in the craftsmanship of days gone by. It demonstrates how communities were dependent on their local landscape in order to source local materials, and where possible, avoided the need to use transport.”

Local artists and crafters will show their skills and display their wares, and during the day the event will feature traditional dances by the very unconventional, Hemlock Morris.

On the day, staff from the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery & Bedford Museum will help interpret artefacts and images from the history of Harrold and Odell and creative activities for families will include brass rubbing and lantern-making
