Local Democracy Week

Tuesday 12th October 2010

Young people will be getting to grips with the mechanics of local democracy this week. The Integrated Youth Service (IYS) aims to get students thinking about the professionals who operate Councils and learn more about what local councillors are and what they do.

Local Democracy week runs from the 11th – 17th October and officers from the IYS are visiting seven upper schools to deliver a half hour consultation session with young people.

After the talk, the sessions will become more interactive with IYS officers working with students to find out what services they would put in place for young people if they had the opportunity to create a service. The students will then be invited to Borough Hall as part of ‘National Take Over Day’ on November 12th to work on the best ideas and building them into community action plans.

Cllr David Sawyer, portfolio holder for Children’s Services said: “Local democracy week is an excellent way of educating our young people and introducing them to the way we govern our society. It’s a great opportunity to gain a better understanding of the needs of our young people through interactive sessions and gaining valuable insight from their contributions.”
