Local Democracy Week
Tuesday 12th October
Young people will be getting to grips
with the mechanics of local democracy this week. The Integrated
Youth Service (IYS) aims to get students thinking about the
professionals who operate Councils and learn more about what local
councillors are and what they do.
Local Democracy week runs from the
11th – 17th October and officers from the IYS
are visiting seven upper schools to deliver a half hour
consultation session with young people.
After the talk, the sessions will become more
interactive with IYS officers working with students to find out
what services they would put in place for young people if they had
the opportunity to create a service. The students will then be
invited to Borough Hall as part of ‘National Take Over Day’ on
November 12th to work on the best ideas and building
them into community action plans.
Cllr David Sawyer, portfolio holder for
Children’s Services said: “Local democracy week is an excellent way
of educating our young people and introducing them to the way we
govern our society. It’s a great opportunity to gain a better
understanding of the needs of our young people through interactive
sessions and gaining valuable insight from their
