Sunflower House's Mural Adds More Sunshine

Tuesday 19th October 2010

Sunflower House, in Bedford, has undertaken a project which has seen all its young people get involved; a mural art project that is growing in size!

Local artist, Paul Nicholson, has helped the project take off the ground and continues to guide Sunflower’s children, as they all feed into its overall completion. The mural covers a long fence at the bottom of the sites garden, which the children had described as ‘boring’. Now, it has been transformed into an exciting piece of artwork. As each child is contributing to it, a number of contrasting themes are featured. The sea is one such theme, a dinosaur also appears and there’s even a donkey wearing an iPod looking over the fence!

The children have also used the internet to source images and artwork that they were keen to secure in their environment.

Sunflower House caters for children age 8-18 and provides short stays for children with disabilities, either as a respite care service for parents/ carers or for the children to meet new friends and participate in new activities in a different environment.

Cllr David Sawyer, portfolio holder for Children’s Services, at Bedford Borough Council, said: “This has been a wonderful project in terms of stimulating young people’s imagination. It has created an opportunity to carry out work that everyone can feed into and enjoy being involved. When the mural is finished, all its artists will get a sense of achievement, and children will be able to enjoy it for years to come.”

The project started in January 2010 and looks set to be completed by the end of the year (2010).
