GADSBY STREETRESOURCE - IN THE HEART OF BEDFORD

Bedford Borough Council will officially launch its new town centre Gadsby Street base, which assists people with learning disabilities and promotes independent community living, on Tuesday 27th November from midday – 2pm.

The Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, and Cllr Colleen Atkins, Executive Member for Adults Services, will be at the launch event to mark the occasion and to unveil a plaque marking the centre. Mayor Dave will also bury a time capsule at the site, which will be packed with memorabilia representing the year that the centre came into existence. A team of people with learning disabilities were involved in preparing the time capsule and helped pack it with items that were either special to them, or that related to 2012’s events such as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee or the Olympics.

Gadsby Street will provide a space for people with learning disabilities who are supported by adult social services, assisting them to undertake and develop independent activities and make greater use of community facilities situated within the town. The centre will also offer a supported employment service, encouraging and enabling people with disabilities to receive employment support, CV guidance and opportunities to seek volunteer, work placement and paid opportunities.

The Mayor, Dave Hodgson, said: “This facility, in this ideal central location, will help unlock a range of opportunities for people with learning disabilities, including employment and leisure activities.  Crucially, it will support people to live the life they want to live, and I am really pleased that we are now able to offer a facility like this in Bedford town centre.”

Cllr Colleen Atkins, Executive Member for Adults Services at Bedford Borough Council, said: “Gadsby Street really will change peoples’ lives. It is another move towards personalised services, ensuring that individuals have the confidence to achieve their goals and aspirations and to freely navigate around their town centre.”

Gadsby Street will also host an independent living equipment showroom where disabled people will be able to receive advice and information about equipment for independent living. The resource also has a special toilet facility for people to use, which is high spec design to meet the needs of people with multiple disabilities who cannot access ordinary facilities.

The base has established a new central location convenient for buses, trains, shops, leisure services, sports centres and the central library. Gadsby Street will operate flexible hours.
