International cycling event coming to Bedford Borough

The UK’s first ever Women’s Tour will visit Bedford Borough next May.

The Women’s Tour is the country’s first ever international stage race for women and will bring the world’s best riders to Bedford Borough on Thursday 8th May 2014.

Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “It is excellent news that world class cycling is coming to Bedford Borough next May.

“The sight of elite cyclists racing through the streets of Bedford Borough will provide a tremendous spectacle for people of all ages to enjoy.  Details of the route through the borough are still being finalised but we are working to make sure that it gives people every opportunity to experience and enjoy The Tour at close quarters.

“I look forward to welcoming the riders and their teams next May, and to joining the crowds in cheering them on as they race along local roads.”

Bedford is considered by many involved with cycling as the home of women’s racing in Britain, having hosted the Bedford 3 Day stage race for many years, and the arrival of the Women’s Tour is set to enhance this reputation even further.

The Women’s Tour starts on Wednesday 7th May in Oundle, Northamptonshire. Day two starts in Hinckley in Leicestershire and travels south, ending the day in Bedford Borough.

The exact route and timings for the stage through Bedford Borough will be announced in due course and further details of the race and the locations for the remaining stages will be announced over the coming months.
