Win-Win Deal for Council leisure sites secured
The future of all eight leisure facilities in Bedford Borough
has been secured, saving £1million of taxpayers’ money every year
and securing millions of pounds of investment.
Last night (Tuesday 22nd October), Executive confirmed Fusion
Lifestyle as the new provider for leisure facilities in Bedford
Cllr Doug McMurdo, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture,
said: “This is a win-win deal which is great news for local
taxpayers and users of leisure facilities.
“This agreement with Fusion Lifestyle secures the future of
eight leisure facilities, including the Bunyan Centre and Bedford
International Athletic Stadium, saves in excess of £1million per
year and delivers significant investment to improve the facilities
“At a time when many other local authorities are closing or
cutting back their facilities, it is tremendous news that we have
identified an operator who will keep all centres open and improve
Mayor, Dave Hodgson, added: “Bedford Borough has an excellent
range of public leisure facilities, and we are delighted that this
deal protects and improves them for the future while also
delivering major savings for local taxpayers.”
Tim Mills, Director of Business Development for Fusion
Lifestyle, added: “We are delighted to have been given the go ahead
to take on the management of the leisure centres in Bedford
“We have a proven track record of providing leisure centres
across the country and we look forward to the opportunity to bring
investment and improvements to the centres in Bedford Borough.”
Fusion Lifestyle has pledged to invest over £3million across our
Leisure facilities including £1.2million at the Bunyan Centre. This
will significantly improve and enhance our Leisure sites,
particularly our health and fitness facilities for residents.
There will also be investments of approximately £10million over
the 10-year contract term to improve the buildings and equipment.
This includes replacing health and fitness equipment and facilities
as well as carrying out improvement and maintenance works.
Earlier this year, the Council invited tenders from external
organisations to provide Leisure services on behalf of Bedford
Borough Council. Submissions were received from a number of
organisations and these have been evaluated in recent months.
From early 2014, Fusion Lifestyle will take over the running of
8 Council leisure facilities: Bedford International Athletic
Stadium; Bunyan Centre; Mowsbury Golf Course including squash
courts; Kempston Outdoor Centre; Blue & White Peris and
Robinson, Kempston and Oasis Swimming Pools. The facilities will
all remain in Council ownership.
