Adoption

THIS WEEK IS ADOPTION WEEK (3rd – 9th NOVEMBER)

It is Adoption Week from 3rd – 9th November and Bedford Borough Council is using the campaign to highlight its need for more prospective adoptive parents to come forward. There are currently 24 children in the borough waiting to be matched to an adoptive parent/family.

In the past six months, 15 children have been adopted in Bedford Borough.

It only takes 81 days at Bedford Borough Council to match a child to prospective adoptive families once court authority is given, that compares to the England average of 210 days.  Hopeful parents looking to adopt children in Bedford Borough are currently enjoying the shortest waiting times - Bedford Borough is ranked number one in the eastern region and in the top five in the country for achieving better results for their local children.

Cllr Sue Oliver, Executive Member for Children’s Social Care said: “We are determined to find adoptive parents for those children on our list. Although Bedford Borough's new Adoption Service is doing amazingly well at the moment, there is always a need for more families who can offer a loving and supportive environment. If you have ever considered providing a home for an adopted child please get in touch now.”

Anyone may be able to adopt a child as long as they are 21 or over – adoptive parents can be single, married, a same sex couple, or the partner of the child’s parent etc.

Children from various ethnic origins have been adopted, including White British, White European, Black African, Asian, Mixed Ethnic origins.

Those seeking more information on adoption can contact Bedford Borough Council’s Adoption Team on 01234 718718 or email adoptionandfostering@bedford.gov.uk
