Heritage Day

African and Caribbean Heritage Day

This Saturday, 28th October, will see an African and Caribbean Heritage Day at The Higgins Bedford to mark Black History Month.

Come along and get involved with community stalls, music, storytelling, arts and crafts workshops, African and Caribbean food to taste and ‘Up for Debate’ discussions in the afternoon, all for free.

These ‘Up for Debate’ discussions will run from noon-4pm, hosted by Edward Adoo from BBC Three Counties and will include topics such as ‘Growing Up Black and British’, ‘Representation of Black People in the Media- Why does it Matter?’, and ‘Sankofa- “Go Back and Get It” exploring Black History over the last 30 years and more.

This event is linked with the Sankofa exhibition at The Higgins Bedford which is open until February next year, and celebrates the 30th anniversary of Black History Month while exploring Bedfordshire’s own Black History through the inspirational people within the African and Caribbean community.

Cllr Sarah-Jayne Holland, Portfolio Holder for Leisure said: “This event is for the whole family with storytelling and drumming workshops, in addition to what is sure to be a series of stimulating discussions through ‘Up for Debate’. Alongside the Sankofa exhibition, this is a great chance to learn more about the heritage of the African and Caribbean community in the UK and more locally in Bedfordshire.”
