Two powerful productions highlighting the issue of child sexual exploitation

Bedford Borough Council and the Bedford Borough Safeguarding Children Board (BBSCB) have commissioned a theatre production company to deliver powerful performances to children and young people in Bedford Borough. There are two open performances for members of the public to attend which inform them about grooming and to help people spot the signs of sexual exploitation.

Chelsea's Choice is an educational play which highlights the very serious and emotional issue of child sexual exploitation. The production shows how young people, boys and girls, are groomed by adults for the purposes of sexual exploitation using various methods, ensnaring young people and eventually taking complete control and dominating their whole lives. It tells the harrowing true story of a young girl ‘Chelsea’ from Northamptonshire who was groomed and held captive, in a flat, for the sexual gratification of her captors.

Crashing highlights how child sexual exploitation can affect boys and young men. It tells the story of Eddie. At 15 years old he lost his mother to cancer, lost his father to depression and found himself out on the street.  Whilst sleeping in a shop doorway Eddie was approached by Michael.  Michael was kind, good fun and owned a shop with an empty flat above it.  He offered Eddie the chance to stay there until he got back on his feet, but unfortunately Michael had another agenda.

Cllr Shan Hunt, Portfolio Holder for Children’s Social Care at Bedford Borough Council, said: “I would encourage parents to attend with their children aged 12 and over, they are also beneficial for anyone who may come into contact with or are working with children and young people.  These performances are free to attend and provide the perfect opportunity to learn more about the topics discussed.”

Jenny Myers, Independent Chair of the Bedford Borough Safeguarding Children Board said: “These plays are powerful and moving and are a great tool in helping us raise awareness of this incredibly important issue. We have delivered Chelsea’s Choice over the last 3 years which has been seen by over 8,000 children and young people in Bedford Borough. It’s fantastic that this production returns with Crashing which highlights that boys can also be the target of these evil perpetrators.”
