A Fresh Start

Wednesday 29th September 2010

New management is already starting to raise standards at Woodside Middle School.

In order to enable the best use of expertise and resources, Woodside has formed a federation with Putnoe Lower School for their Year 5 to 6 students. These pupils are being taught on the Woodside site, under the management of Gill Peck, who is Executive Head teacher of Woodside/Putnoe School.

Gill Peck said: “We have set curriculum targets for the end of year that are hugely challenging and we are determined to meet them. We believe a positive learning environment is the pre-requisite to high standards and achievements and our exciting curriculum will support us in achieving the most challenging of targets. It has been immensely satisfying to see the difference that our changes have already made this term and to see pupil’s confidence and ambition to learn grow in equal measure.

My leadership team share a strong drive for improvement and excellent teaching will support each and every pupil to delight in achievement.”

Cllr David Sawyer, portfolio holder for Children’s Services, at Bedford Borough Council, said: “It’s clear that these students have embraced the change, they are happy to come to school and their behaviour has reflected this. Pupils are now engaged in their learning. This federation programme is a shining example of what a difference excellent teaching staff can make to a school’s overall culture. Raising the standards of a school’s physical appearance can also impact greatly on the learning experience. The work that has gone in to improving this school is generating positive outcomes for all involved; teachers, parents and students alike.”

The school’s Parents Consultation Meeting took place on Wednesday 22nd September. Feedback from the event was extremely positive about the progress being made and many parents stated that their children had responded well to the new structure and boundaries set in place.

The school is currently under a formal consultation process. If the consultation supports recommendations of the Borough, the Woodside Middle School will officially close, with ‘Putnoe Primary School’ taking over the building from September 2011.
