Potential Market Traders 'Rolled up, Rolled up!'

Monday 13th September 2010

More than 30 potential market traders took advantage of the council’s FREE information sessions on ‘how to become a market trader’. The events took place on Monday 6th September, in the Harpur Suite, in Bedford, and feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive.

The initiative was lead by Bedford Borough Council, in partnership with Building Enterprising Communities, and received funding from the East of England Development Agency (EEDA) and the European Social Fund (ESF). The day provided people with an opportunity to ask questions, to find out more about starting up as a market trader and consider whether it would suit their business objectives. Individuals were informed that from as little as £13.50 per week, they could start casual trading on Bedford’s markets, subject to paperwork and insurance.

Attendee comments:

“Realisation that market traders are earning a good living, so I can do the same.”

“Gave me an insight into costs etc. and what help is out there.”

“Well presented, friendly, a very good clear overview of what you are taking on with the offer of more detail, if you want it.”

The Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “The event was a huge success, attracting a diverse range of people. We are keen to support anyone who is looking to become a new market trader. Once individuals have the inclination to start-up a market stall, and the talent to keep it running, there is no stopping them from making a real success of it.”

Anybody with a flair for selling and a good eye for business can become a successful market trader, as either a part-time or full-time career. The council have an experienced team to help support and advise those that may require encouragement during their start-up period.
